Growing habit: This slow-growing agave forms a solitary rosette.

General Care Instructions for Garden Croton (Codiaeum variegatum)
Light Requirements
- Crotons thrive in bright, indirect light. They can tolerate some direct sunlight, which enhances their vibrant leaf colors, but avoid placing them in harsh, midday sun, especially in hot climates. Insufficient light may cause the leaves to lose their vibrant color.
Watering
- Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Crotons prefer higher humidity, so misting the leaves or using a humidity tray can be beneficial, especially in dry indoor environments.
Soil
- Use a well-draining potting mix, such as one formulated for tropical plants. The soil should retain moisture without becoming waterlogged, which can lead to root rot.
Temperature
- Crotons prefer warm temperatures between 60°F and 85°F (16°C to 29°C). They are sensitive to cold and should be protected from drafts, cold windows, and temperatures below 50°F (10°C), which can cause leaf drop.
Fertilization
- Feed crotons during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks. Reduce feeding during the fall and winter when the plant’s growth slows.
Pruning
- Prune your croton to maintain its shape and encourage bushier growth. Remove any dead or yellowing leaves to keep the plant healthy and attractive.
Repotting
- Repot your croton every 2-3 years, or when it becomes root-bound, into a slightly larger pot with fresh potting mix.
Pest Control
- Common pests include spider mites, mealybugs, and scale insects. Inspect your plant regularly and treat any infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Propagation
- Crotons can be propagated through stem cuttings. Take a cutting with at least three leaves, dip the cut end in rooting hormone, and plant it in moist potting soil. Keep the cutting warm and humid until it roots.
These care tips should help your croton thrive and maintain its beautiful, colorful foliage.
