Angiopteris evecta is a giant fern from the dinosaurs’ era. It can grow huge with each frond up to 26 ft (8m). The caudex or “the foot” of the plant looks like a dinosaur’s foot and it gets bigger with every leaf.

Still, Angiopteris evecta is an easy fern, it doesn’t need the high humidity that other ferns need. However, be patient with this fern. They start slow. It can take up to 6 months before they start growing. Give it heat from below and cover the pot with plastic or glass. Once it starts growing, then just treat it like any normal houseplant.

We ship them without the soil, treated and packed according to phytosanitary requirements.

Planting Steps when growing in garden (in tropical areas)

  1. Selecting the Location: Choose a garden spot with half shade or filtered sun and wind protection. Enrich the soil with a quality soil improver and plant fertiliser.
  2. Planting: Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root-ball. Gently loosen the plant’s roots before placing it in the hole. Backfill and firm the soil around the plant.
  3. Watering: Water the plant thoroughly after planting and maintain soil moisture for several weeks.
  4. Mulching: Apply an organic mulch around the plant, avoiding direct contact with the trunk.
  5. Feeding: Lightly fertilize in autumn and spring to promote strong root development.

Additional Growing Tips

  • Water Requirements: King Ferns need abundant water to thrive.
  • Space Consideration: Ensure ample space as fronds can reach up to 8 meters (26 feet) and the trunk up to 3 meters (10 feet) in height.

This fern, with its prehistoric charm, is a true spectacle in any garden. Its care involves regular watering, protection from harsh elements, and nutrient-rich soil. The King Fern, or Angiopteris evecta, is not just a plant but a statement piece for your garden, offering a glimpse into the lushness of rainforests.
