Agave titanota ‘Solar Eclipse’
Scientific name: Agave titanota ‘Solar Eclipse’
Common names: Solar Eclipse Agave, Rancho Tambor Agave
Natural habitat: This cultivar is a selection of Agave titanota, originally native to the limestone cliffs of Oaxaca, Mexico. It thrives in arid, rocky environments and is well-suited to dry, well-drained soils.
Flowers: This agave produces a tall flower spike, typically with yellowish-green flowers, after many years of growth.
Foliage: The most striking feature of Solar Eclipse is its thick, fleshy leaves, which are a dramatic blue-green. These leaves are heavily armed with black spines along the edges and at the tips, creating a vivid contrast. The rosette can grow up to 18 inches (45 cm) tall and 2-3 feet (60-90 cm) wide, forming a compact, dense structure.
Light: Agave titanota ‘Solar Eclipse’ thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade, particularly in hotter climates where some afternoon shade can prevent leaf scorch.
Watering: Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering significantly as the plant enters dormancy.
Growing habit: This slow-growing agave forms a solitary rosette.
Hardiness: USDA zones 9 – 13. Check your USDA zone.

General Care for Agave
Light Requirements
Agaves thrive in full sun, requiring at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. They can tolerate partial shade but need bright light to maintain their vibrant foliage and compact growth. In areas with intense afternoon sun, some species may benefit from a bit of shade during the hottest part of the day.
Soil
These succulents prefer well-draining soil. A cactus or succulent potting mix is ideal, and adding sand or gravel can improve drainage. Agaves are not particular about soil pH, but they do best in slightly acidic to neutral conditions.
Watering
Agaves are drought-tolerant and require infrequent watering. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot. In the growing season (spring and summer), water every two weeks or when the top 2-3 inches (5-7 cm) of soil are dry. Reduce watering to once a month during the winter.
Temperature and Humidity
Agaves are hardy in USDA Zones 9a to 11b. They prefer warm climates but can survive brief periods of frost. Ensure the plant is kept dry during cold spells to prevent frost damage. Agaves do not require high humidity and can thrive in dry conditions.
Fertilization
Agaves are not heavy feeders. Apply a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength once in the spring. Avoid over-fertilizing, as it can lead to excessive growth and weaken the plant.
Pruning and Maintenance
Pruning is generally not necessary for agaves. Remove dead or damaged leaves to keep the plant healthy. Be cautious of the sharp spines when handling agaves.
Repotting
Agaves grow slowly and do not need frequent repotting. Repot only when the plant outgrows its container, usually every 2-3 years. Use a well-draining potting mix and ensure the new pot has drainage holes.
Pests and Diseases
Agaves are relatively pest-free but can occasionally be affected by mealybugs, scale, or agave snout weevils. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil to treat infestations. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure the soil is well-draining and the plant is not waterlogged.
Propagation
Agaves can be propagated through offsets (pups) that grow at the base of the plant. Carefully remove the offsets and plant them in a separate pot with well-draining soil. Allow the offset to dry for a few days before planting to prevent rot.
By following these care instructions, you can enjoy a healthy and thriving agave plant that will add a dramatic touch to your garden or indoor space.
