Scientific name: Agave potatorum ‘Tradewinds’
Common names: Tradewinds Agave, Variegated Butterfly Agave, Century Plant
Natural habitat: This cultivar is a hybrid likely originating from Mexico, specifically bred for its ornamental value. It thrives in dry, rocky soils typical of arid and semi-arid regions.
Flowers: Pale green to yellow, with red tinges and red bracts, blooming from late summer through winter.
Foliage: The ‘Tradewinds’ Agave cultivar features a compact rosette of stiff, blue-gray leaves bordered by creamy white variegation. Each leaf is armed with maroon marginal spines and ends in a long, sharp terminal spine. The rosette grows up to 12 inches (30 cm) in both height and diameter, making it a striking yet manageable size for gardens or containers.
Soil: This plant prefers well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent potting mix.
Light: Full sun is ideal for the vibrant coloration of this agave. It can tolerate partial shade, but bright light is necessary to maintain its compact form.
Watering: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During winter, reduce watering even further, as the plant is dormant and requires less moisture.
Growing habit: This slow-growing, evergreen succulent forms dense rosettes that can eventually create clumps through offsets. It remains small, making it ideal for containers or as a focal point in a rock garden.
Hardiness: USDA zones 9 – 13. Check your USDA zone.

Due to the extended U.S. tariffs introduced by the Trump administration, we’ve been forced to stop selling live plants. The U.S. was our main market, and without that revenue, it’s no longer possible for us to continue offering plants to other countries either. We sincerely thank you for your support — and we look forward to resuming full operations if the situation changes.

General Care for Agave

Light Requirements
Agaves thrive in full sun, requiring at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. They can tolerate partial shade but need bright light to maintain their vibrant foliage and compact growth. In areas with intense afternoon sun, some species may benefit from a bit of shade during the hottest part of the day.

Soil
These succulents prefer well-draining soil. A cactus or succulent potting mix is ideal, and adding sand or gravel can improve drainage. Agaves are not particular about soil pH, but they do best in slightly acidic to neutral conditions.

Watering
Agaves are drought-tolerant and require infrequent watering. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot. In the growing season (spring and summer), water every two weeks or when the top 2-3 inches (5-7 cm) of soil are dry. Reduce watering to once a month during the winter.

Temperature and Humidity
Agaves are hardy in USDA Zones 9a to 11b. They prefer warm climates but can survive brief periods of frost. Ensure the plant is kept dry during cold spells to prevent frost damage. Agaves do not require high humidity and can thrive in dry conditions.

Fertilization
Agaves are not heavy feeders. Apply a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength once in the spring. Avoid over-fertilizing, as it can lead to excessive growth and weaken the plant.

Pruning and Maintenance
Pruning is generally not necessary for agaves. Remove dead or damaged leaves to keep the plant healthy. Be cautious of the sharp spines when handling agaves.

Repotting
Agaves grow slowly and do not need frequent repotting. Repot only when the plant outgrows its container, usually every 2-3 years. Use a well-draining potting mix and ensure the new pot has drainage holes.

Pests and Diseases
Agaves are relatively pest-free but can occasionally be affected by mealybugs, scale, or agave snout weevils. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil to treat infestations. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so ensure the soil is well-draining and the plant is not waterlogged.

Propagation
Agaves can be propagated through offsets (pups) that grow at the base of the plant. Carefully remove the offsets and plant them in a separate pot with well-draining soil. Allow the offset to dry for a few days before planting to prevent rot.

By following these care instructions, you can enjoy a healthy and thriving agave plant that will add a dramatic touch to your garden or indoor space.
